She is Zen's older brother's eldest daughter, when she was a child her mother and little brother died from starvation after an epidemic and a bad harvest, at that time her father was already dead too but it was never specified the cause, the most likely in a war somewhere, since then she was raised alone by Yuba, she's equally close to everyone in the village with the exception of Sayo and Shin as they were the ones who spent more time with her in her childhood when they were learning spirit arts together from Yuba and that as fellow orphans they hung out a lot too.
Since seeing Yuba's reaction when Rio said to her his parents' names and later Rio was allowed to stay with them in their house she suspected that he may be related to Yuba somehow too, but she did the tactful thing and decided to not ask about that until they decide to talk themselves, when Rio finally told her that they were cousins she was more surprised about Ayame being a princess than about being related to Rio, she was happy about it nonetheless.
By Yuba's petition she helped proactively in helping Rio to adapt to the village and to form a favorable relationship with their neighbors, when all the village's girls began to address Rio as Rio-sama she was the only one that kept treating him normally what made Rio to consider her as his only important conversation partner, when all the boys got jealous of all the time that Rio and her spent together she never paid it any mind and defended Rio from them.
